 Fiber
Our small fiber flock consists of two ewes and two llamas....all animals were chosen specifically for their fiber quality.
We have two Bluefaced Leicester x Coopworth ewes, both white; The fiber is very soft, lustrous and has wonderful crimp. The presence of Bluefaced Leicester qualities greatly improves the "handle" of the fiber. We shear the sheep at least yearly...sometimes twice a year, depending on our energy level....the fiber length is always 4-6 inches long. Our fleeces are heavily skirted and sent out to a mill to be cleaned, carded, and made into roving. Whole unprocessed fleeces will be sold if arrangements are made prior to shearing time. Roving from these ewes sells for $12-14 per pound. Samples will be gladly sent upon request.
Our llamas have no appreciable guard hair in their fiber. We send samples for diameter measurement periodically. The fiber diameters from our animals range from 22 to 32 microns depending on the animal. This fiber is extremely soft, silky, and shiny....contrary to some information, llama fiber spins wonderfully without the addition of any sheep's wool. We shear our llamas yearly in early to mid May. Our llama fiber is heavily skirted, and sent to a mill to be cleaned, carded, and made into roving. Since llamas do not produce lanolin, the raw fiber needs only a simple wash to be completely clean. Our llama roving sells for $2.50 per OUNCE. Samples will be gladly sent upon request.
